Mmuo: Igbo masquerading, spirituality and visual resonance

This body of work is an introspection into Igbo masquerading. “Visually grotesque and flamboyantly performative, Mmanwu – the masquerade – is an oracular staple in the ancient lore of Ndigbo”. The masquerade has no competition in its role as the ultimate celebraity in a festival. Their existence bears the mark of ancestral wizadry – both spiritually and physically.

Mmanwu is derived from a combination of the two Igbo words ‘mmụọ’ meaning spirit, and ‘ọnwụ’ meaning death. The masquerade represents the spirit of the dead. Mmuo is a glorious hybrid that creates a chance for us to see the masquerading as a practice that not only conceals, but rather one that invokes.

Mmuo explores art in motion. Emotive, kinetic and arresting.
